The Paleozoics and Cenozoic of Silver Star

We’re mainly a gray brigade of ski tourers who have assembled to ski Silver Star Mountain. To prove we’re inclusive, however, we invite Cyrus Desmarais, age 24, to join us. By the end of the day Cy is seriously questioning whether he should ever ski with such paleozoics again.

Prime Rib of Goat

Prime Rib, an 11-pitch rock climbing route on Goat Wall near Mazama, is outside our normal territory but we've included it because its unusual qualities make it a must-do route for Central Washington rock climbers. This guidebook information was first posted in 2009 but locals who have climbed recently agree this is a worthy route.

Hoofing the Goat's Beard

This past weekend Vern Nelson and Craig Gyselinck completed the second known ascent of the Goat's Beard ice wall in Mazama. This brutal 400+ meter climb lasted from dawn to dusk and required 11 pitches to conquer. One climber responded to their trip report with sheer awe: "I was almost beyond words just reading...of your accomplishment. Eleven pitches of ice?!!!!!"
