Valhalla and More

Cathy and Drew Gaylord started backcountry skiing this year. About a tour to Lake Valhalla and Mt. McCausland, Drew writes, "Before getting into this, we had wondered if all the climbing for just one run would be worth it. We got an answer... the run we had Saturday was far better than a whole day of lift skiing."

Super SUP

Kim Anderson reports how SUP (Stand-Up Paddling) is taking water by storm. It's what snowboarding was to snow twenty years ago. It's a cross between canoe paddling and long-board surfing. And it can be done on the Columbia River, Lake Wenatchee, Lake Chelan, or even on high mountain lakes.

Ice Condition Report: 12/12/07

 Local ice meister Mark Shipman wrote to say: 
"Ice is forming rapidly up the Icicle.  I haven't been climbing yet, 
but I hope to get at least some climbing in on Thursday. "

Prepping for Flowers

It will be a month before the flowers peak, but now is the time to prep,so that when you’re out with friends later, you can look at a bouquet of blooms and say, “I say, take a look at those yellow-bellied lilies sharing nutrients and nitrogen with those phloxy collomias like the soul mates they are most definitely not! How singularly peculiar."  We've got some good resources for you to bone up
