Picture of the Week - 2/21

Marc Dilley has been working hard at taking exceptional photos this winter. Here, he explains how he risked drowning to capture this shot. Obviously getting great photos isn’t just about being in the right spot at the right time, whipping out the camera, pointing, and shooting.

"I have been wandering around the Wenatchee River in fisherman's hip waders trying to get rushing water in the frame for up-close-and-personal foregrounds. I was in knee deep rapids for this one, and it was so dark that I had to use a headlamp to see. To steady the tripod in the rushing water I filled a nylon bag, suspended from the tripod, with about five pounds of stones. I stopped down the lens to f/16 to maximize depth of field and, due to the darkness, the exposure time was 45 seconds. I tried five exposures to get it correct. In the final exposure there were some streaking stars that I had to clone out. The view is upstream looking towards Icicle Ridge."
